what is the Quran?

الإجابة المختصرة

The Quran is Islam's holy book. Muslims believe it is God's literal speech, revealed to Muhammad in Arabic over 23 years and preserved word for word since. It has 114 chapters and about 6,236 verses, and is recited daily in prayer by nearly two billion people.

The Quran describes itself as guidance, sent down in Arabic, and challenges readers to find a contradiction in it. It was revealed in pieces over 23 years (often answering live events), memorized by the Prophet's companions, written during his lifetime, and compiled into one standard text within two decades of his death. Millions of people today know all of it by heart, a chain of memory running back fourteen centuries. Translations exist in every major language, but Muslims treat them as explanations of meaning; the Quran itself is the Arabic. In prayer, it is always recited in the original.

how is it organized?

114 chapters (surahs), roughly longest to shortest, from Al-Baqarah's 286 verses to chapters of three lines. It is not chronological; themes weave and return. Most Muslims read it with a translation beside the Arabic.

how should i start reading it?

Start short: the opening chapter (Al-Fatiha), then the last thirty chapters, then Maryam (19) and Yusuf (12) for narrative. Read a good modern translation, slowly. The glossary here explains terms as you meet them.

أسئلة متكررة

Is the Quran the same everywhere?

Yes. One standard Arabic text worldwide. Printed copies differ only in script style and page layout.

What is the difference between Quran and hadith?

The Quran is God's speech; hadith are the Prophet's recorded words and actions. They are kept strictly separate.

Can non-Muslims read the Quran?

Of course. Translations are written exactly for that. Respectful handling is appreciated.
